2 or 5 DIGIT ADD-ON
Commonly used with ISBN (International Standard Book Number) or ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) barcode symbols.
The ISBN numbering system was established as a method of cataloguing each new book title and edition. The adoption of the EAN (European Article Numbering) system allows books to be scanned through stores under the same symbology as that used for general goods. The ISBN New Two symbol has a two digit add-on code which is used to carry in-house supplementary information while the ISBN New Five version has a five digit add-on which is used to encode price.
ISSN is used for serial publications, i.e. magazines, newspapers, periodicals and journals. The two digit add-on supplementary code is used to differentiate between the various issue numbers. There are no rigid rules, but generally weekly publications will be numbered from 01 to 52 (or 53) through the calendar year, daily publications will run from 01 to 07 repeating weekly and monthly publications will be numbered from 01 to 12.The ISSN symbol may appear on it's own, with a two digit add-on (ISSN + 2) or with a five digit add-on (ISSN + 5).
Apart from EAN-13's, the UPC (Universal Product Code) symbology also allows for supplementary codes to be added to the main barcode. These add-ons can be 2 or 5 digits. The UPC supplementary codes were mainly intended for use on books and periodicals, but may also fulfil an in-house function. UPC supplementary codes available are UPC-A + 2, UPC-A + 5, UPC-E + 2 and UPC-E+ 5.
MAGNIFICATION FACTOR
The amount to multiply the nominal dimensions of a barcode to obtain the actual dimensions for the electronic master or film master. As an example, the dimensions of a nominal size EAN-13 symbol at Magnification Factor 100% is 37.29mm (width: inclusive of 'Left and Right Light Margin' areas) and 26.26mm (height). Magnification factors range from 80% to 200% for EAN-13 and EAN-8 symbols, 50% to 100% for ITF-14 (EAN-14) symbols, 25% to 100% for UCC/EAN-128 symbols and 50% to 94% for SSCC symbols.
